Turkey Carving Tips From the Pros – 4 Easy Steps!

Happy Thanksgiving from P.T.R.C. Inc. Here are four turkey carving tips you can use this Thanksgiving holiday.

Step 1:
After that delicious bird is hot out of the oven, be sure to cut the string tying the legs if there is one. We don’t want that to wind up on anyone’s plate. Pull the legs away from the body. Cut through the skin and bend back the thigh until the thighbone pops out. Cut at the joint to detach leg completely.

Step 2:
With the legs now detached, cut between the joints and separate the thighs from the drumsticks. Cut those pieces into slices and they are ready to plate.

Step 3:
Starting from the middle of the bird, keep the blade close to the rib cage, use it as your guide. Slice along each side of the breast plate to remove the meat. When you get to the wings, cut them off at their joints.

Step 4:
After the bird is carved, slice the breasts cross-wide, skin side up, and arrange on the platter.

Happy Thanksgiving from us at P.T.R.C. If you have any questions about filing with P.T.R.C. Inc., we have a friendly customer service team that is here for you.

Tips to Save On Heating Costs This Winter

Long Island doesn't feel much like an island in the Winter months. We have that typical northeast weather that requires a lot of tea, hot chocolate, sweaters and comfy socks. There are some good aspects of Winter, but one of the worst ones is the cost of heating your home and water. Luckily for you, your friends at P.T.R.C. Inc. are here to save your some money again:

heating costs | property tax reductions

Turn Down the Thermostat
Did you know that every degree on your thermostat is worth about 3% of your overall heating bill? For example, leaving the thermostat at 72°F will have you spending 9% more than leaving it at 69°F. Take this into consideration when your family says they need more heat!

Bundle Up
Adding an old sweater or sweatshirt to your in home wardrobe is a great idea to help cut down costs. You don't need to look fabulous for the family, but comfort is key! When you're going to be home for a large portion of the day, don't dress like you're on a Bahamas vacation.

Upgrade Your System
A lot of people make the mistake of thinking that repairs are more worth it because of the lower initial cost, but they would be wrong. If your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old, repairs could wind up being a waste of money. You'll repair the fan and then the pilot will break, or something else will falter and the cycle will go on. Consider buying a new high efficiency unit if your old furnace or boiler is on the fence.

Utilize Fans
During the Winter months your fan should run in a clockwise direction on low speed. This will circulate the warm air throughout your home so your furnace or boiler doesn't have to work as hard. Keeping them running counter-clockwise will have the opposite effect and suck hot air right away from you!

Once you are done saving on utility bills, you can turn your focus to property taxes! Since 1990, P.T.R.C. Inc. has been handled over 260,000 successful grievances and we are looking to do a lot of the same next season.

2018 Nassau County Property Reassessment Delayed

Unfortunately, Nassau County properties will not be reassessed early in 2018 as it was originally planned. This delay is great for those who have been filing for reductions and it is the complete opposite for those who have not. They will still be paying for the reductions of others until the reassessment happens:

Make Sure You Get Out and Vote
In Nassau County and all of America, the only way to get your voice heard is to go out and vote. Regardless of which candidate you support, they are going to support your interests so you need to make your interests known. The property tax issue in Nassau County is a big one, and whichever candidates are elected will have to right the ship! Properties all over the county are being wrongly assessed and it is going to impact the innocent homeowners.

Property Values Are Inaccurate
Claudia Decker, a Long Beach resident for over 20 years, was told on October 19th that she would have just four weeks to make a $5,000 payment on her property taxes. A rise in school district taxes is largely responsible, but the faulty assessment on her property is more to blame:

  • Nassau County put a value of $602,900 on Decker's home.
  • If she had filed under Mangano's program in 2016, her property would have been valued at $390,000.
  • The homeowners who DID file for grievance in 2016 were granted reductions and Decker was left paying for their reductions.
  • Her taxes will go up again next year.

When Will It Happen?
The old system left homeowners like Decker paying for the reductions of their neighbors. After investigation, Newsday found that hundreds of properties throughout the county were being wrongfully assessed during Mangano's term. Filing for grievance is important and once this issue is sorted out, P.T.R.C. Inc. will be here to get you the reductions you deserve!
