After Hurricane Sandy occurred, there were many speculations that price gouging was occurring at several gas stations in New Jersey and New York. The gas crisis that arose after the storm created much havoc at gas stations.

On Long Island, four stations were accused yesterday by the state attorney general for charging as much as $9 per gallon for regular gasoline after superstorm Sandy swept the East Coast.

The stations charged were as follows:
  • Shell – 408 Rockaway Tpke, Cedarhurst - $5.05 per gallon
  • Express Mart/Babylon Gas Station – 1000 Rte. 109, Lindenhurst - $4.99 per gallon
  • USA Petroleum – 11 E. Main Street, East Islip - $6.75 per gallon
  • USA Petroleum – 2664 Rte. 112, Medford - $9.00 per gallon

What do you think about price gouging? Did you get overcharged for gas after Hurricane Sandy? Let us know on our Facebook page, LINKED HERE.

Consumers can file complaints by calling 800-771-7755 or filling out a form at ag.ny.gov/hurricane-sandy-price-gouging-complaint-form. Consumers are also being advised to save any receipts they may have from gas stations.

35,000 LIPA customers suffered flood damage from Sandy as well. These customers will be unable to have their power restored until electrical repairs are made on their property. Many of these customers are located in the Rockaways area, which is powered by LIPA.

LIPA has also reported for the customers who need electrical work, they've set up assistance centers to help with process.

Gas Rationing Begins on Long Island

Odd/even gas rationing is scheduled to begin on Long Island in both Nassau County and Suffolk County and throughout New York City today. Rationing began at 5 a.m. this morning on Long Island and 6 a.m. in New York City to try and ease some of the tension that has been seen at several gas stations since Hurricane Sandy touched down on the East Coast.

The temporary rationing system will require gas stations to sell gasoline only to motorists with the appropriate license plates in correspondence to the date. License plate numbers that end in odd numbers can only purchase fuel on odd-numbered days.

Even number plates may only purchase gasoline on even-numbered days. Vanity plates will be able to purchase fuel on odd-numbered days as well. Gas rationing restrictions apply to out of state plates as well. These restrictions are similar to those seen in 1973 during the Arab oil embargo.

Many Long Islanders have already begun feeling the effects of the Nor’Easter. Many parts of Long Island are experiencing rain, light snow and once again, power outages. After only one week since Hurricane Sandy barreled down on the Island, many have not had the chance to recover from the super storms aftermath.

As winds are increasing on Long Island, the LIPA website showed the number of customers without power has increased again. Some Long Island schools have experienced power outages and students are being sent home early.

Please stay updated with the forecast for the next two days. Be sure to take all of the necessary precautions to keep you and your family safe at this time.
