What To Do If You Missed Our Grievance Deadlines

The grievance deadlines for Nassau and Suffolk county have come and gone, but don't think you have entirely missed out on your opportunity to lower your property taxes. Just because you missed this year doesn't mean you don't get to try again! You will have to wait until the next filing period. Here is everything you need to know about preparing for the following grievance deadlines and what can be done before that.

A Few Steps You Can Take To Lower Your Property Taxes

There are some simple things that you can do throughout the year leading up to tax day, which will help lower your property taxes. It doesn't have to be complex or complicated, so here are some tips to help you save money until our next grievance period:
  • If you have more than one residence in different counties, consider filing with only one county. You can use the other as a vacation home or rent it out.
  • Cut down trees or vines growing on your property that might be considered a nuisance by an appraiser if they affect the house's marketability or curb appeal.
  • Schedule regular inspections of your home to catch any problems before they escalate into costly repairs or increased taxes.
  • Claim all your exemptions and deductions, such as property tax deductions or real estate tax exemptions.
  • Maintain your roof well-- If you have a good roof, it can save up to $600 on your annual property taxes.
  • Set aside money each month.
  • Donate items you no longer need to help declutter your property.
  • Contact us to file for the next grievance period!

End of Spring Curb Appeal Tips

The days are getting longer, the air is getting warmer, and it's almost time for summer. Even if it's late spring, that doesn't mean we can stop caring about our homes' curb appeal! If you need a quick fix to make your home more appealing this spring before summer hits, here are a few curb appeal tips that will give your house an instant boost.

Maintain Your Lawn

Cut your lawn and remove any weeds from your yard- that's a good start to making your home look better. The more often you cut your property, the healthier it will be. Keep that fresh, green look for your yard into summer.

Plant Some Flowers

Plant some flowers or shrubs near the entrance of your house to bring a brighter and more colorful look to your home. If you're unsure what type would work best in your climate, talk to someone at a garden center for recommendations and tips. Be sure you invest in flowers or shrubs that are meant to last through summer as well!

Clean Up Outside

The springtime is known to cause a lot of leaves and debris to fall all over. Your deck, roof, and gutters become cluttered with these items, and it can start to look pretty messy. An excellent place to start is by cleaning out your gutters. Not only will this make your home look better, but it will also ensure rainwater has somewhere to flow to help avoid water damage to your home. Also, take a leaf blower or another backyard tool and blow away all those tiny green leaves on your deck, patio, front porch, and driveway. Your home will look much neater!

Tax Season Dos and Don’ts

The dreaded Tax Day is quickly approaching, and with it comes a lot of pressure. You need to do many things to ensure that your taxes are filed correctly, and while it may seem like there's no time left, there's still plenty of time if you start now. With these Tax Day Dos and Don'ts, you'll be prepared for all that comes with filing your taxes.

Dos:

  • Be organized by saving receipts and organizing paperwork before the deadline.
  • Use electronic filing if possible as it will save time and money with less paperwork needed to be filed.
  • Double-check your tax withholdings by comparing them with last year's income and other documents related to earnings from this year.
  • File as early as possible-- filing before Tax Day will give you more time to work out any kinks in your taxes.
  • Know which forms to fill out, such as W2 or 1099.
  • Ask a professional if you're unsure about anything when it comes to your taxes.
  • Take advantage of any tax breaks or deductions that you may be eligible for.
  • Be aware of what deductions you can take on your taxes before filing.

Don'ts:

  • Don't forget to sign your return.
  • Avoid procrastination! This could lead to forgetting essential documents or incurring penalties from a late filing.
  • Try not to forget deductions-- many taxpayers overlook this section of their return, but it can save a lot of money!
  • Don't wait until Tax Day to file your taxes. It would help if you started as soon as possible.
  • Try not to forget to make sure you have all your financial documents in order - make copies or digital files if necessary, so they are readily available on the day.
  • Don't be unprepared for your interview with a tax professional. They are here to help you, so make sure you're all ready for them!
