How to Apply for Property Tax Grievance in Suffolk County

With the deadline for Suffolk County coming up, make sure you’re fully prepared and informed on how the property tax grievance process works. To make it easier for you, we have laid out all the necessary steps you’ll need to complete in order to get everything done before the deadline approaches.

Submit Your Forms

Submit your signed form! The application can be found on our website and it only takes a few short minutes to fill everything out-- getting you started on your property tax grievance journey.

Gain Confirmation

Receive confirmation from our team. P.T.R.C., Inc. will reach out to you and let you know whether or not you are eligible for the grievance application. We will work with you to figure out where your application stands.

Let P.T.R.C. Represent You

Once your application is accepted, P.T.R.C., Inc. will represent you before the Board of Assessment Review (BAR). This is the board specific to Suffolk County.

The Process, Continued

If the BAR were to accept your form and case, we here at P.T.R.C., Inc would proceed with the reduction process. However, if the decision is different, we will move forward with the Small Claims Assessment Review(SCAR).

What we do With Denials

If denied at the board level, SCAR is the only way to get a reduction for your home. Not to worry! Our team has been very successful here and “a $30 court filing fee is required for SCAR to purchase an index number which guarantees your case to be heard.”

The Appeal Process

On your behalf, P.T.R.C., Inc will complete all the necessary paperwork and pay for the index number needed. Once filed, the Supreme Court will schedule a meeting for your case. This step could take a few months, depending on how many other SCAR appeals have been filed

We will use the Comparable Market Analysis in your appeal process, which compares properties in the same area of your home. From here, P.T.R.C., Inc. will appear on your behalf and show all the necessary information and evidence needed.

Final Steps

Once successful, there are a number of ways the reduction grant can be adjusted. We have stated on our website that “the reduction can be reflected on your tax bills in which case you would pay your taxes based on the lowered assessed value and thus no refund will be due to you.” Also, as a result of the reduction, a refund check can be issued for the overpayment of taxes.

The last action that can be taken is a partial adjustment in your assessed value, which means a partial refund can be issued for the time being. Each option differs for each person, but we will ensure we find the right solution for you.

Repeat this process again next year in order to ensure a reduction in your property taxes again!

Worthwhile Spring Renovation Projects

Spring cleaning isn’t necessarily all about tidying up-- it’s about renovation too! If it’s been a while since you’ve done anything to freshen up your home, now might be the perfect time to consider it. The warmer weather makes it easier to complete projects both indoors and outdoors. Here are some worthwhile spring renovation projects to consider for your home:

Repainting Indoor Walls

Over time, your walls can fill with dust and stains from years of aging. Now is the perfect time to upgrade your house with a fresh coat of paint. Whether you stick to the same color or change, it is up to you. A new color or a bit more brightness to the interior of your home will help freshen it for the new season.

Upgrade Your Flooring

Have you forgotten what a smooth and new flooring looks like? Maybe it’s time for an upgrade. Consider putting in new flooring in the rooms that need it most or merely giving your wood floors a refinishing or your carpets a deep clean. Doing so can increase your home’s value too.

Add a Deck or Patio

The outside of your house can benefit significantly from some renovation, too. Depending on your yard, you may want to consider adding a deck or patio to spruce things up. Both of these projects can be done by summertime, so you’ll have someplace to spend time with friends and family.

Outside Transformation

Old backyard furniture can weaken and break with age. Now is the perfect time to upgrade. Consider new and stylish patio furniture for all your spring and summer needs. It will make you want to spend all your time outdoors!

Ways To Stay Productive While At Home

It can be hard to focus when you’re doing work from home. It’s easier to be productive in a work or school setting since you’re not as used to doing everything at your own house! But it’s important to stay mindful of your work ethic and figure out some helpful ways to get yourself on track and getting used to the change:

Create a Work Space

It’s essential to separate the leisure parts of your home from your working area. Set up a makeshift office space to get the feel of actually being in the office. If you are doing your work from your bed or couch, you might feel less motivated to push yourself!

Get Dressed

It can be so much easier to stay in pajamas all day, but doing so can keep you unmotivated. That isn’t to say you need to dress fancy, but something other than sweatpants or pajamas will help get you in a more productive mindset.

Stick To a Schedule

Your daily routine, while working from home, can be quite different from the method you have on a regular workday. Try not to ruin any sleeping schedules or let home distractions get in the way of your daily tasks. Create a plan and stick to it, so you’re able to complete your work as efficiently as if you were in the office.

Put Away Any Distractions

Depending on where you are set up for the day, you could be surrounded by plenty of potential distractions! Make sure you put the phone away and turn off the television if you find yourself lagging. Also, make sure you have quiet space for phone calls and meetings if they happen to come up last minute.

Know When To Take Breaks

It is so easy to lose track of time while working from home. If you’re cooped up in your room and staring at a computer screen all day, of course, it will take a toll on you and your work ethic. Take little breaks throughout the day to ease this tension. Walk around the house, grab a snack, and take a breather. Don’t let yourself get too overwhelmed.
