How To Prep Your Home For Summer

With summer just around the corner, it’s important to start preparing your home for the season! Summer brings long days and fun in the sun, but to fully enjoy it, your yard and home must be prepared. Here are some tips to ensure your home is ready for the summer fun ahead:

Prep Your Summer Tools

Make sure you’re all stocked up on summer essentials before the season begins! Lawn mowers and edgers are key to keeping your front and backyards looking neat. Additionally, you can invest in any pool cleaning supplies or gardening essentials you may need!

Check Your Roof

Heat can cause damage to a lot of different areas of your home, but your roof suffers the most from intense hot weather. The heat can cause your shingles to crack and warp over time, which leaves room for other potential damage to your house. Inspect your roof for any needed repairs before the 90-degree temperatures start!

Declutter Your Gutter

Your gutter is essential for preventing water damage to your home. Over time, it can become clogged with leaves and other debris. You won’t want that when a huge summer thunderstorm hits! Declutter those gutters early on, so that you know your house will be protected.

Inspect The Attic

You never know if some critters decided to let themselves into your house for protection from the winter weather! Now that it’s getting nicer outside, take time to fully inspect your attic for any unwanted visitors.

Summer Weather That Can Damage Your Home

When you think of weather that can impact your house, it’s not often you would think of it happening in the summer. From intense heat to heavy thunderstorms, your home could face some potentially damaging weather conditions this upcoming season. Make sure you’re prepared and know what to keep an eye on.

Heat

Probably the most common factor in home damage during the summer is the heat. Too much warmth on your roof can cause cracked or warped shingles. An extreme amount of heat can cause wood to expand, creating uneven surfaces for your deck or shingles. It can even damage paint, making it fade away quicker than it should.

Humidity

From the heat comes humidity and a bunch of other issues. Moisture can cause mold and mildew build-up in your attic or between your walls. If the humidity finds its way into any other parts of the house, it will also cause decay and damage. Moisture can sneak its way into your home through the seals of your doors and windows, so keep an eye on any signs of humidity in your home and get them fixed as soon as you can.

Thunderstorms

Summer is known to have some intense thunderstorms. Heavy amounts of rain can lead to roof and structural damage to your home. Leaks and other issues can surface because of torrential downpours as well. Not only is the rain a problem, but sometimes the thunder alone is enough to cause potential problems! The shock wave and pressure of the thunderstorm could give your home interior and exterior damage.

Fun Things To Do At Home

It’s important not to feel defeated while staying home for so long. It may feel like there is nothing to do around the house, or that you’ve already done it all, but we promise that isn’t true! Here are some fun activities to do with the family to make staying at home a bit more fun:

Game Nights

The tradition of family game nights can continue! Have everyone in your house come together on certain nights to participate in some family fun activities. For those who can’t see their loved ones, you can do a virtual game night with them instead. Make it a weekly thing, and take turns playing your favorite games. Having a routine night will give you something to look forward to during the week, too.

Movie Nights

Set aside a designated movie night for each week, and take turns picking the film. Get out the popcorn and candy for the occasion and create a comfy space to sit back and watch. There’s also the option to stream movies with friends and family virtually, too.

Test Out New Recipes

Do you have a list of recipes you’ve always wanted to try making? Well, now is a perfect time! Cooking and baking can also be great ways to decrease stress, too.

Pick Up New Hobbies

Have a hobby you always wanted to try? Now is the time. There are so many endless possibilities-- from crochet to learning a new instrument, to trying to read a bit more. It’s a time to push yourself and learn new things; you might even find something you love to do.

Five Handmade Mother’s Day Gift Ideas

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about some special gifts for that special lady. Not every gift has to break the bank! Sometimes, handmade gifts made from the heart are just as valuable too. Put your creative skills to the test and make something nice and personalized for mom:

1. Egg Carton Flowers

Flowers are an iconic part of every Mother’s Day. If you want to get creative with the flowers you give your mom this year, consider making some out of egg cartons! Simply cut it up into sections to use as petals, use straws or sticks for the stems, and buttons or beads for the center. Of course, you also need to paint it any color of your choice.

2. Handmade Cards

Break out the colorful paper and glitter for this project -- unless you want to keep it simple! An easy or extravagant handwritten card with decorations and words personalized just for your mom is perfect, and something she can save for a lifetime.

3. Painted Pots

If you have any leftover flower pots that aren’t being used at the moment, you can revamp them for a fresh new look. Repaint them, decorate them, or fill them with her favorite flowers. Plus, she’ll think of you every time she waters the plants.

4. Bake Her Some of Her Favorites

If mom has a sweet tooth, consider baking her a treat or two. From cupcakes to chocolate bark, there are a variety of online and easy to make recipes that your whole family can enjoy.

5. Make a “Reasons Why I Love You” Book

Write out all your favorite things about your mom and put it all together for one very special book! You can add pictures and personalized details but the most important thing is to speak from your heart and let her know how grateful you are for her!

5 Tips for Selling Your Home in the Spring

Selling your home is no easy process, but sometimes adapting to the season you’re selling it in helps a lot. Spring and late summer are said to be some of the best times to sell your house, so here are some tips and tricks to prepare for everything you’ll need during the process.

1. Curb Appeal

While curb appeal is important all year round, there’s something really special about how your home looks in the spring! You’ll want your landscape to be at its best, so consider some beautiful and bright spring flowers in the front yard. Also, a nice front door repaint or siding power wash will ensure your home looks its best.

2. Repairs

If you notice any easy-to-fix issues around the home, it will benefit you and the selling process if you get them repaired before the house goes on the market. Gutters, roofing, siding, and more can all be done easily and fixed quickly!

3. Start Your Selling Process ASAP

Spring is the best time for selling because it’s an easier time for people to research what they want and most families will want to get settled before the new school year begins. Late April early May is said to be the best time for selling since it’s nice outside and you can take advantage of the longer days. So, start getting everything ready soon.

4. Declutter The Inside

If you have a lot of furniture and items around the house, it could seem cluttered and messy to new eyes. Consider donating some old items that have been collecting dust for years. Separate your valuables from this pile and clean everything thoroughly.

5. Price Everything Fairly

Make sure you do some research before selling! Compare prices of your home and the rest of your neighborhood. It’s not good to overprice since it will probably become difficult to sell. However, you don’t need to go extremely low either. Find that sweet spot perfect for what you’re looking for, a professional realtor can help you with that.
