New York States largest teachers union is planning a legal
challenge to New York’s new property-tax cap. Richard C. Iannuzzi, president of
New York State United Teachers, said that the union could file suit before the
end of the year.
Iannuzzi believes that the requirement of a 60 percent “supermajority”
violates constitutional “one person, one vote” protection that gives every person’s
vote the same weight. He also believes the spending caps are making it
extremely difficult or almost impossible for poor school districts to provide
the “sound, basic education” that many schools are obligated to provide under
NY state constitution.
