The MTA is reporting that the price for a LIRR (Long Island
Rail Road) ticket could increase by as much as 15% by March of 2013.
Although the proposal for the 15% increase includes new
incentives such as discounts for military personnel and Family Fare, it is said
that prices will still increase between 7.1% and 15.3% depending on ticket type
and location.
The most expensive ticket will be a monthly pass for those
customers traveling from zone 14 in Suffolk County. The rate for a monthly pass
will increase from $429 to $446. The price hike will also be seen on subways,
buses and bridge and tunnel tolls. The new plan is designed to raise $450
million new revenue each year that will go toward raising employee pensions and
benefits.
