Odd/even gas rationing is scheduled to begin on Long Island in both Nassau County and Suffolk County and throughout New York City today. Rationing began at 5 a.m. this morning on Long Island and 6 a.m. in New York City to try and ease some of the tension that has been seen at several gas stations since Hurricane Sandy touched down on the East Coast.
The temporary rationing system will require gas stations to
sell gasoline only to motorists with the appropriate license plates in correspondence
to the date. License plate numbers that end in odd numbers can only purchase
fuel on odd-numbered days.
Even number plates may only purchase gasoline on
even-numbered days. Vanity plates will be able to purchase fuel on odd-numbered
days as well. Gas rationing restrictions apply to out of state plates as well.
These restrictions are similar to those seen in 1973 during the Arab oil
embargo.
